FFKM Seal

1. What Is an FFKM Seal?

FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer) is a high-performance elastomer with extreme resistance to temperature, chemical corrosion, and aggressive media. It combines the chemical resistance of FKM with high-temperature tolerance, capable of withstanding acids, bases, solvents, and more.

Simply put:
FFKM = Ultimate chemical seal + high temperature tolerance + ultra-low permeability

2. Core Performance Advantages

Property

Description

Chemical resistance

Almost inert to acids, bases, ketones, alcohols, esters, aromatics, halogens

Temperature range

-20 ~ 327 (short-term up to 400)

Low compression set (CSR)

Long-term high-temperature sealing

Ultra-low permeability

Suitable for vacuum and high-pressure gases

Aging resistance

Stable under heat, ozone, UV

High mechanical strength

Can handle high pressure and cyclic loads

3. Typical Applications

Industry

Examples

Semiconductor

CVD/PECVD chamber seals, corrosive gas valves

Chemical

Strong acid/base, solvent pipelines, pumps and valves

Pharma / Biotech

CIP/SIP seals, solvent transfer lines

Petrochemical

High-temp/high-pressure reactors, heat exchangers

Aerospace / Energy

Hydraulic, fuel, extreme temperature valves

4. Common Seal Types

  • O-Rings: Most common, static and dynamic sealing
  • Flange / Face seals: High-temperature chemical equipment
  • U/V lip seals: Stem or sliding applications
  • Custom profiles: Special equipment sealing

 5. Material Selection & Design Tips

Aspect

Recommendation

Compression

15–25% for balance of sealing and life

Hardness

70–90 Shore A typical; softer for dynamic sealing

Dimensional tolerance

±0.05 mm due to FFKM sensitivity

Chemical compatibility

Select appropriate FFKM grade (e.g., Kalrez® 4079, Chemraz® 505)

Temperature match

Consider continuous vs pulse high-temperature exposure

6. Common Failure Modes

Failure

Cause

Leakage

Insufficient compression or undersized

Surface cracking

Over-compression or chemical incompatibility

Edge distortion on custom seals

Insufficient mold precision

Demolding defects

Mold design or surface treatment issues

FFKM is expensive. Precise design, processing, and collaboration with suppliers are critical.

7. Engineering Recommendations

1) Confirm Customer Conditions

·         Temperature, pressure, chemical media, dynamic/static use

·         Special attention to vacuum or high-pressure applications

2) Selection & Inventory

·         Standard O-Rings vs custom profiles

·         Keep small batch inventory due to high material cost

3) Manufacturing & QC

·         Mold precision ±0.05 mm

·         Surface finish Ra < 0.4 μm

·         Clean handling and packaging
